MAKING HISTORY PUBLIC

2026: TEN YEARS OF BARRIO STORIES

barrio stories_edited.jpg

I wrote a play! For the first time, I’m taking my storytelling from the page to the stage. My short play will be presented as part of Borderlands Theater’s Barrio Stories 10-Year Celebration on Novemeber 12th through the 15th, 2026. Yep, it’s been 10 years!

The play is a site-specific theater experience, performed in the very place where the conversation at the center of the play actually happened. I’m excited to see what happens when something I wrote is brought to life by actors in front of an audience.
More details coming soon.

Barrio Stories
My book La Calle inspired an outdoor, site-specific theatrical event, Barrio Stories, produced by Borderlands Theater in 2016 in Tucson’s downtown area. More than 5,000 people attended the play, which was designed to recover the history of a barrio declared expendable by city leaders who purposely devised an urban renewal program to demolish it in the late 1960s.  Lean more about the production.
